Born in Detroit and raised in the suburbs of southeast Michigan,
Mike earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan
University, majoring in Geography and Writing. After working
briefly for the Ann Arbor Public School System, he headed
to the University of South Carolina where he earned an MBA
in 1984.
It
was then on to the Big Apple, with stints in advertising with
Deutsch, Shea & Evans, and N W Ayer. While at Ayer, Mike
worked on the AT&T business and was recruited to join
AT&T’s advertising organization in 1986.
For
the next 18 years he held a wide variety of advertising, promotion,
sponsorship and event marketing positions in AT&T’s
Consumer Services and Corporate divisions. In the late 90’s,
Mike spearheaded the consolidation of AT&T’s sponsorship
assets, including the Olympics, NBA, Disney, PGA Tour, AT&T
Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
Major League Soccer, and Bowl Championship Series. He led
the execution of AT&T’s event marketing presence
associated with the company’s sponsorship of the Olympic
Games in Nagano, Japan, and Sydney, Australia. He also created
a charity golf tournament in honor of a fellow AT&T employee
who died of cancer in 1991 at the age of 32. Named the Cox
Classic, it has since become the largest one-day amateur charity
golf event in the country and in 2003 was named one of the
“top 40 events in the United States” by Event
Marketer Magazine.
Mike
established eventis after leaving
AT&T in 2004 and continues to lead the execution of the
Cox Classic. He resides in northern New Jersey with his wife
and two children.
